A Precious Human Life

Every day, think as you wake up:

"Today I am fortunate to have woken up.
I am alive, I have a precious human life.
I am not going to waste it.

I am going to use
all my energies to develop myself,
to expand my heart out to others,
to achieve enlightenment for
the benefit of all beings.

I am going to have
kind thoughts towards others.
I am not going to get angry,
or think badly about others.

I am going to benefit others
as much as I can."

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

  1. OK, so I just read your entire blog. This is gonna be kind of brief, because it's 2:17am, and I've gotta work tomorrow. But I just wanted to say this has been an amazing read. I've been dealing with Type 2 diabetes for years, but it seems like a mere annoyance when compared to what you're going through with Type 1. It seems inadequate to say I'm so sorry you're going through this, but I am. I think your attitude is amazing, and I'm glad you've got the technology & new meds to make this even a bit more tolerable. I'm not sure how much "help" I can be since I've "only" got Type 2, but if there's anything I can do or say to help, please let me know! I do understand, at least a bit, about the lifestyle changes forced on you. Anyways, thanks for sharing this. I think it's really brave of you, hope that doesn't sound corny.
    Love you,
    Aunt Tobi

    1. Hey Auntie Tobi!
Thank you for all your support and positive words. And no "only" about it...at least from my point of view, diabetes is diabetes...no one does more than anyone else to deserve it, and the stigmas attached to the different types are ridiculous. I'm sure you have to deal with a lot of crappy people judging you, and for that I really admire you. I appreciate any and all tips that you've accumulated during your years with Type 2, especially your favorite low-carb snacks!! I hope to see you and catch up soon!

    2. Hey, Avery. You're welcome, and Thanks to you. :-) My favorite low-carb snacks tend to be on the protein/fat side. You can buy little snack-size packs of peanut butter (chunky!) and snack on that (celery works with it, too). I've also found companies have started producing more snack-sized packages of cheese, which is a weakness of mine. Pistachios are also really great & pretty portable. And then there's always fruit. I find apples are particularly good at not making my blood sugar spike, but adding some bulk (ie fiber!) that I really need. Prunes actually are another favorite of mine (they're not just for old folks!) Also, for things like airplane flights, where I might not get food for a while, I will pack Luna bars or the lower carb Kind bars. They have some carbs, but also have a lot of protein & are pretty satisfying. For cereal, I'm really fond of Bob's Red Mill Old Country Style Muesli. It's got great texture (lots of different whole grains), dates & raisins & no added sugar. It's REALLY hard to find cereal with no added sugar! Let me know if I can help with anything else.
